Has anyone else had severe pain after using bone growth stimulator?

Doctors say it doesn't cause any adverse side effects except for maybe irritation at the sight, however, when I first got it, after using it for 2 days post op my pain shot up between 8 & 10. I quit using it and after 2 days I started feeling better again. I tried using it again and in about 5 hours had severe pain again.

I had the bone growth stimulator and couldn't feel it at all. Maybe the lead placement is bad? Or maybe there's something wrong with the unit? I would have those checked to start. There should be an 800 nuraber for the company. Try calling them and asking if others have had such a problem. Maybe they'll send you a different unit to try.

Mine is an external stimulator. I contacted the technician & he said that there were know side affects except for irritation. The doctor also said I shouln't have any problems with it, however, he said if I do, stop using it. I tried using it one more time after seeing the doctor & am now in severe pain again.

Hmmm. I'm sorry to hear that. I had the same one you have. Can you feel it at all when you have it on? I mean, not the pain it's causing, but the stimulation itself? I couldn't feel anything. I just had to trust that it was actually doing anything. It seemed to have helped me, as I was showing bone growth really quickly. But lots of people don't get the bone growth stim and still get nice strong fusions. It's a help, but it's not essential. Don't be upset if you're not able to use it. Just eat a healthy diet, take a multivitamin, and walk, walk, walk as much as you're able.

I would still call the company and ask if there's any chance that the unit itself is defective. Can't hurt to give it a shot. Like the doctors said, it shouldn't cause any pain. But clearly, you're having pain, and it seems connected to the bgs, so it's reasonable to try to figure out why.

Take care,
Emily

Thanks for your help. I think I will call the company. The doctor seems to think I will fuse well even without the stimulator.

During my first fusion surgery my surgeon inserted bone growth stimulator during surgery. Wires were attached to hardware.
11 month later it was surgically removed, wires were removed only during my second fusion surgery.

I don't know if it caused any pain to me since I was and I am in a lot of pain still. It did not make any difference when it was removed.
Feel better and take care!
