I have the Advance Bionics Precision. The battery is one of the smaller ones. I've had mine since Feb 2007 and have not had any problem with it. I have the flat panel lead . as far as the surgery, I think soreness at the battery site was worst than at the lead which was place up against spine. I'd do it again cause the relief outweighs the few days of discomfort from the surgery. It's easy to recharge, I usually put the belt on at bedtime and it beeps when charged. I went it for reprogramming in Feb of this year. I have four different programs, right leg, left leg, back, both legs and back. I have a lot of leg pain and nurabness in left thigh. Before I was limited on where I went if a lot of walking was involved. Now if it bothers me, I just turn it on , comes with remote control. I've reduced pain meRAB a lot.
