The Plie
This is a basic exercise in using the barre. It is performed by stretching all the leg muscles and prepare the body for more exercises. Plie exercise the body in shape and placing. It is performed in all of the 5 basic positions of ballet. There are two kinds of plies, the demi and grand plie. The knees are bent halfway in demi, while the knees are completely bent in grand plie.
The Eleve
Simply rise onto the balls of your feet. Raising onto the balls of the feet from plie position is called - Releve. Doing Eleve and Releve with the barre strengthens your ankles, feet and legs. This is the usually taught in the beginning of ballet class. Practice Eleves in all five positions of ballet.
The Battement Tendu
This is a type of barre exercise where you open and close your working legs. Easiest done with the barre. There are many types of battements though. A battement Tendu is basically an exercise where you have to stretch your leg along with the floor and end in a poit, or as simple as lift one leg at your front, side and back then return it to your supporting leg. This exercise stretches your leg muscles, build strong leg muscles and improve your turnout.
