species confusion

What cartoon animals were you unclear of exactly what they were suppose to be at first? Some examples for me were:
  • Back when Ren & Stimpy was a show I watched a handful of times at other people's houses, I thought they were a rat and a hamster respectively.
  • When I first saw a print ad for Foster's I thought that Mr. Herrimen was a dog
  • When I was really little, for some reason, I thought that Gyro from Ducktales was a seagull. I also thought that Launchpad was a pelican.

Well duh. Pelicans don't quack. :-P

Seriously, though, here're mine.

*I never knew what Ren & Stimpy were until about 5 years ago. And even then I still get them mixed up, because neither looks like more than a tiny bit like their respective species.

*I thought Yakko, Wakko and Dot were dogs.

*On the flip side, I never pictured Goofy et al. as dogs. I always thought they were some sort of made-up species.

*I also thought Bonkers was a made-up species, because he sort of reminded me of Marsupilami. Maybe it was the spots and the fact that they were both part of Raw Toonage.

Oh, and come on, who actually would have expected Chowder and Panini to be cat/bear/rabbit things?

"Okay, Mickey's a mouse, Donald's a duck, Pluto's a dog...what's Goofy?"

"He's a dog. He's definitely a dog."

"He wears a hat and drives a car. He can't be a dog."

"Jesus, that's scary..what the hell is Goofy?"

What the hell was Snarf from the Thundercats?

I mean, I know they were from another planet - a planet where there are, apparently, cat/reptile hybrids (something I would probably try to crush with a cinderblock if I ever found one in my house) - but did it have a name? A genus-species, perhaps? Just curious.

When Pete first appeared in the Alice comedies, he was supposed to be a rat, since he was created to be a foil for Julius the cat to conquer. Then when he was recast as a foe to Mickey Mouse, he was remade as a cat. Currently, he's a not-quite-certain.

For my own confusion, I originally thought that Hanna-Barbera's Paw-Paws were dogs until I first heard the show's theme song, which described them as bears.

I've never quite understood how Pluto and Goofy could both be dogs, when one talks and wears clothes and the other doesn't. In fact, it drives me crazy when cartoonists do that.

I STILL don't know what Brain, the Tibble Twins, or Mr. Haney on Arthur are supposed to be. Bears?

Also, in F-Zero X and F-Zero GX, Leon was a cat. In F-Zero GP Legend/Falcon Densetsu, he's guy that turns into a werewolf.

In the Punky Brewster cartoons, I remember thinking Glomer was a cat.

I always thought Gonzo was supposed to be some kind of bird, but then I had one person tell me he's an elephant, and another person telling me that he's a combination of all sorts of animals. I still think he's a bird though.

I didn't know that TonyTony Chopper was a reindeer when I saw a picture of him. I just thought that he was some weird hamster with antlers for some reason.

They're Aardvarks. In the first book, they all had long noses, but their designs slowly evolved to the point where they don't look like anything any more. (which, ironically, defeats the purpose of the first book)

Although I think Brain is a bear.

I actually thought the same thing about Launchpad. He really does look more like a pelican than a duck.
