Special Alarm Clock

I struggle waking up every morning when I wake up for work or just wake up early in general, even after a good night's sleep. I simply seem to really, really NOT be a morning person. I can go on less sleep and wake up just fine if it's a later morning hour, but if it's anytime before 7am (every M-F), it's very tough even with 8 hours of sleep. I've tried taking naps in the evening after work and I feel about the same. I'll feel more energetic right after my nap, and can still fall asleep fine, but in the morning I still feel awful. I literally feel like I had been drinking the night before and feel hungover. I definitely get a lot of vertigo.

I am noticing a pattern... I wake up when it's still dark outside.. and when I wake up later with the sun out, I feel a million times better. I am thinking about trying one of those special alarm clocks that gradually brighten up the room to mimic a sunrise. Has anyone tried one of these? Were they very helpful? Simply turning on the lights won't do the trick because it's the actual getting out of bed that I struggle with. I'll try setting my alarm earlier some days and I end up snoozing like crazy until the last minute and regretting it later on. I am also getting tempted to overdo it with the caffeine.

Any tips would be greatly appreciate!!

FYI, some background on me: My blood work is completely normal (I saw a doctor for being tired not long ago), I am healthy, I work out 5 days a week and am at a healthy weight for my height, I eat a healthy diet and try to avoid a lot of processed foods, I typically have 1-2 servings of caffeine a day, I tend to sleep through the night fine, I fall asleep quickly, do take birth control pill and Prozac (Prozac DOES make me tired, but I felt this way before too) - going off of them is not an option. Also, I've been waking up at the same time for about 10 years, so I am VERY used to this schedule.

Put your alarm clock on the opposite side of the room, and make sure it is the annoying beeping alarm. This will force you to get out of bed to shut it off, and then the biggest battle of standing up out of bed is already finished. You can also put the alarm in an adjacent room to ensure you have to get up and walk further to shut if off.

I usually post in the chronic pain forum...but wanted to suggest a light box...

I just purchased one online...and don't think I can name the maker of the one I got..but feel free to PM me and I can let you know as it works wonderfully and didn't cost very much..

You use it as soon as you wake up..and can watch tv..read the paper..have coffee...do anything in front of it for 15-30 minutes..you only have to ocassionally glance at it during that time..you just sit in front of it...

I actually put it on a breakfast table (for my bed) and enjoy my cup of java watching Morning Joe on tv LOL...

After the first week..i had to cut down to 15 minutes as I was almost TOO buzzed...haha...it gives you amazing energy and sense of well being naturally...so during these winter months..it's been fantastic!

I also take Ambien each night because I have FM and chronic pain from surgeries..and this medicine has allowed me to finally after so many years get to stage 4 sleep and feel rested each day:)

Just my little 'ol thoughts..feel free to PM if you want..

Thanks so much for the replies! I actually use an annoying rooster alarm clock that definitely works, but it's more of the fact that I know I can get away with snoozing til the last minute, so I don't feel motivated enough to wake up. I want to actually feel somewhat refreshed in the morning and not terribly groggy. I don't expect myself to be a morning person or feel all peppy, but just some kind of improvement would be greatly helpful! Perhaps I need to make myself a list of reasons why I need to start getting up earlier to make life easier. I'm always scrambling around to get out the door on time. Today was amazing.. for some reason I woke up before my alarm and didn't feel awful... so I thought I'd take advantage of that feeling and get up rather than snoozing since I figured I'd probably be groggy if I went back to bed. It was nice! I had time to curl my hair into a nice style. I typically end up wearing a lot of ponytails to save time and get headaches from them! I feel much more confident with a nice hairstyle too :) I spend good money on haircuts and highlights at a nice salon, yet I end up being too lazy to fix my hair except for the weekends.

I get nervous to put my alarm in a different room because I do shut all the doors at night and worry that I wouldn't hear it. I do keep it away from arm's reach though :) definitely helps! I keep the doors shut to keep my dogs from exploring at night. One of them has eaten a few cords/wires, so I have to make sure they don't run off having nightly adventures. Some people suggest that I don't let my dogs sleep in bed with me, but honestly, they seem to HELP! They are two small dogs and since I get cold at night, they keep me warm. They don't snore or do anything disturbing and sleep until I get up and go back to sleep with me if I do too. I am considering getting a warmer comforter too. I tend to get very cold at night, even if I feel comfortable all day, and I wear warm pajamas.

I really, really want to look into the light box, especially if it's not expensive. I saw that some of the alarm clocks with lights are kind of pricey, so I want to really get some good background on them FIRST so they aren't a waste of money. I tend to not ever wake up and read the paper or watch the news or enjoy some coffee.... I typically get up and immediately go start getting ready and if I have coffee, I drink it while getting ready. Maybe I can try to start using a light for a little bit and see if I CAN actually enjoy some down time in the morning. Freetown, I'll definitely message you later on about more info. on that light box! Thanks again!
