Sparta and Alexander the Great?

I am curious why neither Phillip nor Alexander tried to "subdue" Sparta as they did the other Greek City States and compel them to become part of the new Pan-Hellenic alliance against Persia. Alexander referred to himself as the king of all the Greeks except the Spartans.
Will someone please refer me to some literature concerning this situation?
