Spanish words and masculinity/femininity?

So when writing a story in Spanish about a male character that is an animal that is a feminine word in Spanish, should the article be changed?

For example, if I were to write a story in Spanish about a male spider (even though in Spanish, spider is la araña) would I have to change it to el araña, considering that the character itself is male?
I know this isn't grammatically correct by any conventional standards, but is this done in literature? I remember my Spanish teacher telling me something like this.

Please no Google translating or amateur Spanish speakers. I'm looking for answers from people familiar with Spanish literature.

Thanks!
