Spanish- how to swap from 'distinción' to 'seseo' without sounding unnatural?

Up until now,I've spoke Spanish with a mainland Spanish accent, as that's how I was taught through school. But now, since starting college, everyone-else in my class speaks with more of a South American accent. Quite a difference.
There's been many a time where I've been misunderstood/ laughed at; & I find that when listeening to them speak, I'm drawn more to the way they pronounce 'c's & 'z's, rather than to what they're actually saying. So I feel it would be more useful for me to speak like that. The problem is, when I've attempted to convert, it feels strange, so probably sounds weird too. Is there any way I could make the transition without sounding like a complete knob in the process?
