The Hurricane 1937 is a classic, set in the South seas, the tornado sequence is still thrilling and frightening (it was once described as 'the biggest blow-job in Hollywood history'). It was remade awfully in 1979. I'd also like to see 1939's The Rains Came again (remade in 1955 as The Rains of Ranchipur).

Avalanche! starring Rock HuRABon is pretty much the arse-end of the 1970s disaster cycle.
