can someone explain how the cold war relates to soviet afghan war?

gotta study for final
 
The soviets invaded afghanistan, the US backed the Afghan people with weapons....it turned into the Soviets version of our Viet Nam. We basically used Afghans to fight against our enemy with the only cost being weapons. Soviets had to pull out....too costly. Basically, it was part of the cold war.
