Sound system for Mazda Protege?

I want to make it louder, i want to hear the bass BOOM, and i want it clear... What speakers, or whatever else i should get...amp, sub... what should i get be specific..... I'm not a big electronics person so im not into all the names and details and all that so links are the best.... something that is not really expensive but fair... thanks.
 
Get a good head unit. That's important.

I bought a Pioneer head unit for our Mazda Protege for about $150 a few years back and it has really good sound (including bass). That's with stock speakers. If you upgrade your speakers and put in a sub you'll really be off to the races then.

I put a JVC head unit into the Grand Am I used to have ($100) and it sounded like crap.

A couple cars ago I had a Chevrolet Cavalier that I put an Alpine head unit into and put in all Alpine speakers as well ($1000) and I was pleased with the sound from that.

The more money you spend likely the better quality sound you're going to get.
