Sound Levels

I have noticed lately that sound levels are wildly disparate from day to day and from program to program.

For example, some days I can pretty well hear everything at a sound level, on my remote (I can't program the BEV remote so I use the one from my TV), of 38 [it goes up to 63]. The same programs on cable can be heard at 24.

For example, just now I listened to CNN on cable with the sound level set on my remote at 24 and then a couple seconds later tuned in CNN on my PVR and had to jack the remote sound to 42. The same segment was on both cable and PVR.

On other days for the same programs, on BEV, I have to turn the sound up to 44 or higher for CNN and up to 53 or higher for programs like Numb3rs on CBS. Once the remote reaches 53 or higher it tends to buzz, which is really distracting.

I record most of what I watch on my PVR 5900 but I have found that live programs and recorded both share this issue. I have changed settings on the PVR and it makes no difference.

Does anyone know what causes this variation in sound levels? I never experience this problem on cable, to which I also subscribe.

Does BEV have control over this and if so, how is it controlled?

I'd like to write to BEV about this, but don't want to waste my time or theirs if nothing can be done about it. Also, BEV does not respond to written information or requests so I never know whether they have considered what I have written.

I'd appreciate any input any of you can give.

Thanks.

Certainly nothing new, this is not really a BEV-specific issue. Similar discussions below:

If your cable is not digital, then that explains it because the analogue channels are equalized. Digital Channels are not.

Thanks 57 Moderator. That information was very helpful. I did not know that there were equalized volumes on cable but not on digital. I reviewed the three threads you kindly referred me to as well. It does appear that there is very little, if anything that can be done on the viewer end of things when the sound is way low on the program(s) we are watching.

I still have a couple of questions. Why does the transmission of sound levels differ on BEV from day to day on the same channel and the same program?

Does BEV have no control at all as to how the sound levels are transmitted and/or adjusted?

Thanks again.
