sound distortion on HTC Wildfire mobile phone?

some music plays fine, some of the older music i have e.g. Aerosmith isn't working and i'm not at all happy with the crackling sounds from a phone that costs me 20 quid a month. I just wondered what might be causing it, if its a common problem with HTC phones, because this phone was new today, or whether this is a problem with the handset?... i'm unsure what to do. can anyone give any advice? x
