if there is already a thread on this, please point me there. i did searches on soul eater dub "soul eater" dub and a few others and went through 5 or so pages and didnt find anything.
Well in case you didnt know, Funimation announced the first US Dvd set will hit 2/9/10 containing 13 episodes. It will contain both Japanese and English languages along with English subtitles. So yes, the show obviously being dubbed and pretty far along at that.
But heres the topic... Does it fit the bill?
You be the judge:
Funimation has released the first four episodes of the dub for free public viewing via this link: http://www4.funimation.com/video/?page=show&b=236
The above is Not a video link, just a link to the funimation soul eater page in their videos section. You can choose "DUB only". This will list the first four episodes of the show along with a nuraber of quick 2-3min clips of various parts of the first 6 episodes. This way you can get a good feel for the cast.
Ill start off with my opinion. I am not bashing actors or actresses, just stating my opinion about the voice fitting the character and how i feel about them in particular in the clips i watched.
Maka: Acceptable (but when compared to the attack yells and screams that japanese actress does, definitely falls a little short) -theres ep 1 clips on youtube of the japanese audio. compare those to english. youll see what i mean
Soul: Good. i think this one works pretty well
Black Star: Not feeling it. i mean even in Japanese it was a little high and little kid-like, but i just cant get into this
Tsubaki: good. i have no probs here (i actually love her voice in general)
Kid: nope, not digging it. just a little too "not badass" enough for me, and while the char sure has his moment of not being a badass, the japanese actor still had a deeper voice and i think that worked better.
Patti and Liz: im clumping these together cause i think there great picks and work together well
Stein: Good, i could use a little more depth to his attitude. but good
The Reaper: eh, its not bad. i think the comic goofyness is better in japanese, but i suppose i can deal with this
Makas Father (death scythe): Good, but try as i might to not go by actors.. im a bit biased toward liking Vic, i duno id say hes perfect, but im not disappointed
Overall translation thoughts and move from japanese to english:
i watched each in seperate windows comparing back and forth. not a fan of a few things..
First things first:
Shibusen. this is the name of the school. used throughout the series.
WHY did they have to change this. you dont see japanese shows calling harvard "shinpanru" (i just made that up) or something, its still called Harvard!! why do they feel like they need to change a name, and its short and easy to pronounce.. WTF? I think DWMA sounRAB stupid. Keishen.. i guess this works. but i prefer the simpler translation of just usind demon and demon goRAB, that worked pretty well i thought, now their adding vocabulary that is un-necessary (imo of course).
Also right in one of the first eps, and i wish i remeraberd this better, but there is a nice cinematography shot of the street that maka and soul are on. then we see a mantion and the window breaks.. but in the dub version we dont get the shot of the street at all, its just cut out entirely. that bugs me too. its a dvd, its not like they need to shorten it for timeslots on a dvd. why are you cutting scenes out? (at least its cut in the version online, maybe the dvd will have it? duno..)
thats just a quick blurb. if i watch a few eps both ways, i get in allout rant mode lol.
overall i think it will probobly please enough people, but for those who are a little more picky, i just don't think its going to cut it. its not that its Totally "Aweful" to me, its just that i think it had too much to live up to and fell short.
