sore enlarged knuckle

About four months ago I had something fall directly down onto my knuckle. It hurt like heck. Now after all this time it is still swollen where I cannot wear the ring I used to wear on that finger. It still hurts, but no where near as much as it did when it happened.

I'm getting very concerned, is this how it is always going to be now? What can I do about this, I thought for sure by now this would have healed.

I hope this is posted in the right category, if it's not can someone direct me where I should post this.

Are you talking about the hand knuckle(where finger joins hand) or the finger knuckle(biggest joint in the finger)? You probably should get at least an x-ray of the hand to see if you broke something or chipped something or if you now have arthritis setting in. All you may need is a cortisone shot in that joint to bring the swelling down completely. Fingers can take forever to heal and that would speed it along.

But start with an x-ray(primary doc can order that) and if needed, see an orthopedist who specializes in hand issues....it's really important to see someone who knows hanRAB and not just a regular ortho...been there and you don't want to know how I know this.

I'm talking about the finger knuckle on the typical ring finger. It is on my right hand and I'm right handed. I still can't believe the swelling is still there four months later.

Thanks for telling me that because most folks would think it was a hand knuckle.

I would strongly suggest that you see a hand orthopedist. The finger is different from the hand knuckle in that you need that full range of motion to do what you need to. Damaged fingers can end up developing adhesions from trauma that bind the tendons in the finger and can cause it to freeze in position, or curl up into your palm. Whatever hit your finger might have chipped the bone and that chip may be wedged in your joint somewhere.

Whatever happened, you've given it a long time to recover and it isn't. If you wait too long, you may not be able to fix it. Both my index fingers were broken when I was a child and were left to heal without any treatment and now I can point a circle they curve sideways so badly. And one joint is still enlarged. I'm pushing 60.

If it were a hand knuckle, I would have suggested some routine blood work to rule out any kind of arthritis(like rheumatoid) but it rarely starts in a finger knuckle first.

See a hand doc. You've waited long enough and now it's time to take action.

let me know what happens................Jenny
