im a 24 yr old guy and ive been suffering from pain in my lower back now for a nuraber of years but lately its gotten very sore were if i stand up to quick or lean over a bit im nearly hitting the floor what could be the cause of this pain?? im a hairdresser and stand a lot during the day

I can totally relate to pain that drops you to the floor. I had that for many months before I finally went in to have a Dr. look at it and by that time it was abit to late for conservative therapy in my case so while I cannot tell what it is in your case I can say in mine it was a bulging disc that later turned into a herniated disc which I just had surgery on yesterday so my advise to you is to go find a good spine specialist in your area and get an MRI done to see what the source of the pain is and get yourself taken care of before you wind up in worse shape then you are in now.

Hey there,

I can unfortunately relate to your pain as well. I'm a 24 year old female who has worked as a barista doing fast pace movements and standing on my feet for 4 years now. I didn't start feeling any pain in my back, until just recently, January 18th, 2008 to be more specific. I went to the ER 3 times in a period of 13 days, barely being able to walk by the time I got a legitimate diagnosis(which I am still not very sure of).

The first two trips to the ER suggested that I had a sprain in the lurabar region of my back. The truth of the matter is that the ER doctors are so busy that they will just set aside the worst case scenario just to get you out of their face, and on to the next victim. I was finally ordered to have an MRI the last time I was in the ER (January 29th).

I got my MRI results and saw a neurosurgeon. The neurosurgeon went over my MRI w/ me and told me that I have a large herniated disc in the L-3, L-4 region of my spine crowding over 40% of my sciatic nerve, and also pressing on my nerve endings. He also told me that I have Degenerative Disc Disease.

I'm actually pretty lucky that I was so on top of it, believe me I don't go to the doctor unless I know that something is wrong w/ me. I actually hadn't been to the doctor in I don't know how long before this. For instance, I fractured my ankle in 9th grade, and I didn't even go to the doctor for that. I just let it heal on it's own, I still hear a pop in there when I walk down the stairs. I haven't even had a PCP the majority of my life.

I have been doing PT and it seems to be helping quite a bit to my surprise. The herniated disc in my back was so squishy that the nerve pain was shifting from left to right. W/ PT I have gotten the nerve pains in check, now the pains are not quite as severe and only traveling down my right leg and groin area once in a while. I was lucky to catch the problem early, and learn how to alleviate the nerve damage before it became permanent. Do you have any pains traveling down your legs, buttocks, groin, feet...etc?

I would definitely suggest seeing a spine specialist and/or having an MRI if you have not already done so. DDD occurs in everyone some younger then others. If you catch it soon enough, you can prevent future trauma from occurring in such a short period of time. If surgery is not a first case scenario...then definitely seek other information as to how you can alleviate your pain and/or strengthen your core muscles to help support your back's issues.

I wish you all the best...

Mindy
