THE RECENTLY RELEASED Sony Playstation 4 (PS4) games console is the fastest selling machine of its kind in the UK since a handheld model was released eight years ago.
The PS4 console went on sale at the end of last week and has been snapped up by gamers, or perhaps parents of gamers, ever since.
According to UK games industry body UKIE it has broken an eight year old sales record set by the PSP pocket games machine, and has eclipsed launch week sales of the PS3 and Xbox One.
The platform dominating Call of Duty: Ghosts game is still the sales leader, and UKIE said that a sales burst of around 33 percent has helped it along.
Also selling well are FIFA 14, Battlefield 4, and Killzone: Shadow Fall, and they take the second through fourth spots in the table, respectively.
Sony is dominating the sales charts, and takes all but two places in the All Formats top ten listing. "Every title in the All Formats Top 10 is on PS4 apart from 'Grand Theft Auto V' (+92%) at [number seven] and 'Batman: Arkham Origins' (+155%) at [number] 10," said UKIE.
Sony's success was not ensured. It sold one million consoles on its first day, but then so did the Xbox One.
"PS4 was designed with an unwavering commitment to gamers, and we are thrilled that consumer reaction has been so phenomenal," said Sony Computer Entertainment group CEO and president Andrew House in mid-November.
"Sales remain very strong in North America, and we expect continued enthusiasm as we launch the Playstation 4 in Europe and Latin America on November 29. We are extremely grateful for the passion of Playstation fans and thank them for their continued support."
Of the two consoles, the PS4 sold out the fastest at Amazon. µ
