Sony vegas jpg issues?? (sorry for the long explanation...)?

I'm making a sports video with a bunch of HD videos and lots of pictures I've taken over the season.

The issue I'm having is the fact that my pictures that I took don't have the same quality as before. They come out on the preview screen as way worse and I think it has to do with the size of the picture? They were mostly all taken on my digital camera and have 4000x3000 dimensions which I've come to understand is super big for Sony Vegas. Which means the program has to throw out pixels for the picture to fit on their 720x480 screen....right?

So I tried going to some random picture editing sight like picnik.com (since I dont have photoshop) and downsizing the picture to something smaller than 720x480. But it that doesn't seem to work.. Which makes sense I guess because the site is doing the same thing as sony, getting rid of pixels.

A also tried the whole pan crop thing, but that didn't work out.

I can't really tell you for sure what my settings are set to (quality wise) on Vegas because I'm sort of a beginner. Isn't there some way to make these pictures of mine look like the way my camera took them??? :( If not im going to be super bummed out....

I was also wondering if the preview screen isn't really an accurate judge of quality to what my video is going to come out as once I burn it to a DVD. Besides lagging of course... I know its not gonna lag once I burn it.

Just as a reminder, I DO in fact have videos in my project too, so if there is a method to fixing my pictures and still keeping the quality of my videos, that would be fantastic.

whoever helps me will be my hero!!! :D I want this video to turn out really well because these pictures mean a whole lot to me... Thank you so much!!
