Sony Vegas 8 video track problem?

When editing a video track I used to be able to click and drag a video or audio track and slide it over another and it would automatically fade from one to the other. The I could add transitions to it. Now for some reason the second track just overlaps the one before it. Does anyone know how i could change it back. Thanks
