Sony Vaio laptop screen became dark but not completely black?

It's a Sony Vaio VGN FS640 running in Windows XP. When I turn it on, it starts off fine for a few short seconds then becomes dark, but I'm still able to operate the laptop as normal. It becomes very dark, but you can still see things very faintly. Adjusting the brightness doesn't affect it at all. The screen becomes normal for a second after coming out of hibernation, stand by, or the screen saver, then back to dark.

Any ideas on what it is and how to fix? Thank you in advance.
