I recently bought this Sony MDR-XD200:

I tried to connect it to my HDTV but it only has (1) audio out and it's (red/white) The headphones use a 3.5mm aux input. My Sony 40EX HDTV doesn't have a 3.5mm aux output. So I tried using a RCA cable:

I connected my headphone's 3.5mm jack to this cable and the red/white to the HTDVs audio out (red/white) inserts. I was able to get sound through the headphones but I have no way of controlling the volume. I already have the volume of the hdtv on a minimum but it's still loud. I tried raising the volume of the tv but it didn't change either. My headphones don't have a volume control so how am I suppose to reduce the volume?

The output you connected your headphones to, is usually used for an external audio device, like a home theater system, which usually have their own volume control, so there is no need for the output to be controlled by the TV. Your looking for an In-Line Volume control unit, they're usually around $5.00 - $7.00. This model is the one I've come to like, but now that you know what it's called, feel free to look for others, this model has lasted me the longest, and in my opinion, is well worth the price, the other ones are really cheap, and the wires are thinner, so the tend to break easier.

Home theater setup is always fun, so I use this stuff daily.

Have Fun and good luck. =]
