Sony Ericsson Xperia x10 Firmware questions HELLLP?

Okay so First off, I live in the United States and bought my Xperia about a week ago. It came with 1.6 and have been trying to figure out how to upgrade it to 2.1 I would like to avoid rooting or doing anything that would void my contract. I went to the SE website and youtube page and followed the little tutorial... Well It didn't work... For starters the backup and restore app wouldnt download because it kept telling me that it wouldn't download apps not from the market and well I said fuck it I'd rather lose all my contacts and add them later and have the 2.1 and I went ahead and continued the update... When I got to like the third step it told me my device was up to date... WTF I clicked install anyway it wiped everything from my phone and left me with 1.6 so I was reading up and figured that this was maybe because it isnt available in the US yet so, when will it be available? I would like a set time frame like which months or in how many months cus if it isnt withing like 2 months screw it I'll switch phones... Ive been a sony coustomer since I unpacked my PS1 back in the day... But this is seriously frustrating... What should I do? HELP!!!
