Sony Ericsson Elm J102 Connectivity Problems?

I have added my Gmail account to this handset and it said that Push Email Support was detected and asked if I wanted to switch it on. I have did this and my understanding is that it stays connected to the email server and automatically notifies me of new emails in real time. I noticed that at first the emails were coming in real time but now I can recieve half a dozen emails on the Gmail server and not be notified on the phone at all. I think I have the correct Vodafone WAP and GPRS settings. I had noticed that a globe was showing up at the top left corner which I guess meant that I was connected to the same or GPRS was switched on. I can recieve emails as long as this globe is there. However, it seems to disappear until I manually go into email and click "check email".
Is there something obvious that I haven't seen in the settings or is it the case that although SE say there is Push Email Capability, there actually isn't?
