Something I was thinking about...

...While posting something at the Disney/Pixar Forums on the new voice of Mickey Mouse.

Do you think a child could be able to tell if the voice actor portraying his favorite cartoon character has been replaced with another actor?

I'd say no, but only based on my own experiences.

On the elementary school playground, I remember talking about how the Genie's "voice is going to be different" for the then-upcoming "Return of Jafar". When I watched the movie, I honestly don't recall noticing a significant difference. It's extremely obvious to me now, though.

I suppose it's possible for kids to notice subtle changes here and there, but I don't think many would think the voice actor has changed.

Heck, there's probably some characters with different voice actors that I haven't even noticed.

I personally have always been able to notice voice actor changes from as far back as I could remember. I remember popping in The Return of Jafar the second we got home from K-Mart the day it came out and I could tell Robin Williams wasn't Genie. Of course, I have always been extremely interested in voice actors and the whole process ever since I was a little kid, so I guess that isn't very fair since I'm sure a majority of kids out there don't think about it as much as I did.

I doubt most of them notice at all, but I'm sure some do.

I'm gonna guess no, considering I didn't notice they changed the actress playing Vivian Banks on The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air half way through the series, and that was a much more noticable change. :p

I don't know, I was able to tell that Bugs Bunny sounded way off in Space Jam compared to the cartoons I watched on TV like "Rabbit Of Seville" and "What's Opera, Doc?", but that may be just because Billy West does a terrible Bugs.

When I was a kid, I knew that some got a noticeable VA Change, like Genie and Bugs Bunny as well. As for kids of today, I think unless it's noticeable, I don't think they'll notice as much.

It probably depends on the kid. I noticed whenever a VA changed, but most everyone else I knew who also watched the show(s) in question didn't.

I noticed when Buster Bunny's VA changed from Charlie Adler to that other guy on Tiny Toons (can't remember his name right now), but that was probably because I was like 13-14 and noticed stuff like that more.

It depends on the child, but if you are asking if I think that most little kids would notice the difference the answer would be no, because while the voices are not the same, they do always seem to get someone who is half way similar.

Being a person who watches a lot of anime I like certain voice actors, but for someone that young I highly doubt it.

I was always able to pick out the "fake" Dr. Claw voice whenever he appeared on Inspector Gadget, but I never realized at the time that my namesake on Rescue Rangers had two different VAs (Jim Cummings and Peter Cullen).

Nowadays I tend to notice these things right away, like the terrible replacement Elle voice in the last season of MIB: The Series, or the second Valmont on Jackie Chan Adventures.

As a kid, I noticed when Freddy on "The Flintstone Kids" changed voices----to me, it was quite noticeable (and the first time I ever noted such a thing about cartoon voices). A few years later, "Tiny Toon Adventures'" rendition of the Looney Tunes was noticeable as well (the first project without Blanc voicing Bugs, etc.), though the voices were OK (and the whole show was still quite funny).

-B.

It used to happen quite a few times when I was a kid watching french dubs of cartoons and I always remember being annoyed by it. I didn't understand the whole process and politics of it all and stuff but I knew it wasn't the same voice. It happened a lot more back then than it does now and probably a lot more with our dubs than the original.
