...shop responsible or me? I had liability insurance on the car until 2 months ago because it was not operative and it just sat in the driveway. I let the insurance expire because the car had engine failure problems. Over a week ago, I got my car to the mechanic. I called after 3 days to get a progress report from my mechanic. I did not hear from him at all until today (i called again) and that's over a week ago since my car has been in the shop. He said it happened "Wednesday or Thursday". I was upset that he did not notify me and he finally answered his phone today. He said that he filed a police report but all he had was a police officer badge # and a police report serial # but he did not have a copy of the report. He said that he will replace everything broken and stolen. But he said it like it is a pain in the butt because I did not have my liability insurance. How if possible can I make sure he will not just tell me anything? He mentioned it will take three weeks until it will be ready. My car looks like it is totaled. I am a full time student and worker. I finally was able to save enough money to get my car fixed. Even if I had kept the liability insurance on the car, would I still be responsible for the damages? Thanks in advance.

You should've kept the liability insurance on the car. If he will replace everything broken and stolen, let him do it.

The maintenance department is responsible for your car if it is left overnight there. They will have to pay up or get sued.
