Someone should design software to make END button not EXIT progs

I'm not going to start my rant again on why it is that v3 phones EXIT/QUIT programs when you hit the red END key (again, the right softkey almost always stands for Exit anyways, and it's right there next to the End key). So, do you think it's possible to run a software/hack to make the End key NOT exit software on v3 phones? Anyone up to the challenge?

This is like a viscious circle...in V2, by pressing the END key, it did not exit the program. People complained and Nokia listened. Now, for v.3, you want it to not exit when Nokia has set it to exit when END is pressed.....

Nokia cannot please them all.

If you really want to minimize a program, just hit the MENU key and then EXIT to main standby screen. Your app will still be running in the background.

Personally, I prefer the exit on END key.

Even easier, you can quickly hit the Menu key twice to bring you back to the Standby screen. Why is this such a hard thing? Thing about it like Windows, Start is your Menu key and Escape is your End key. When was the last time you used Escape to exit a program and when was the last time you hit Escape expecting it to do anything besides close what you were doing?

Agree to disagree. I did not complain, as to the END key not exiting programs. As I stated, it makes/made perfect sense to me that the end key would just go to the standby screen (again, because the right softkey usually had the EXIT function on it, and was located right there).

Now, you have two keys doing the same thing, next to each other, and on top of that, it's not the action that is expected by loyal users of the phones/OS.

Oh, and P.S.: if nokia makes this somewhat drastic change, it could have easily offered an option in the settings, letting users use the new or the old function of the end key....they didnt.

Finally, this thread was not started to argue about whether the END key should or shouldn't QUIT/EXIT programs, it was started to ask if anyone thinks it's doable to create such a program, and if someone wants to do it.

Honestly, I don't get the analogy. Hitting Escape in windows does not EXIT programs.

In Windows you mostly use exit and minimize, plus of course the menu key is your start button. In v.2 you had your start button--i.e. menu key; and you had your Exit (right soft key) and Minimize (red END key). You had: 3 buttons for 3 purposes. Now you have 3 buttons that only serve 2 purposes. Why? Where is my minimize.....madness, madness I tell you.

Hitting the menu key twice isnt fast on (at least) the N73, usually I get the main menu, even after two quick presses, then i have to hit it again. Maybe I'm too quick

I think it makes perfect sense for the END key to END a program, since it's the END key.

If a program is meant to be "minimized", the creator of that particular software should make the right softkey "Minimize", or capture the exit message, and minimize itself (FSCaller does this).

you should take a look in the Pocket PC world, where the little "X" on the upper right hand side of a program window doesn't actually terminate a program, but minimizes it. Extensive (and I mean, EXTENSIVE) effort have been put towards making sure the program actually terminates when the "X" is tapped.

Just be glad that you have the flexibility of switching out of an app with a simple double click on the menu button.

I am well aware of the problems in the PPC world where the X doesnt actually terminate the program. And I am thankful for the fact that I can in fact Exit out of programs.

If anything, I agree with you, that the right softkey should be renamed to "minimize" and let the end key quit programs. That would make sufficient sense to me. Why have two keys that do the same thing, I dont know. And aren't these supposed to be multimedia computers that multitask, why the heck then are they not multitasking by quiting programs left and right (or rather, END and right [softkey]).

The END key does what the phone manufacturer design it to do. No one can write software that overwrites that. Most modern phones have a confirmation box pop up asking if the user want to quit the program yes/no.

I get the OPs rant. From 6620 to n93, Im used to pressing the END button to hide the apps. I've restarted replies to email, post on HoFo and other forums multiple times because I accidently pressed end.

It would have been great if Nokia added the option of using the END key to hide or end apps on the settings.

The only app so far that END key doesnt terminate is Agile Messenger.

I havn't done any Symbian programming of my own, so what I'm about to say is pure speculative.

On most API, when the user take action to terminate a program (be it clicking the red "X" in windows, hitting ESC for an applet, pressing the END key), first thing the OS does is generate an "application termination event". It is up to the programmer to handle that event if they choose to. If they do nothing, program quits, but in most cases, the programmer will do stuff like, save user data, close connections, release resources, etc.

Now, if a program is truely meant to stay alive when the END key is pressed, the programmer should take action during the application termination event and keep itself alive.

So I wouldn't fault Nokia for this, it the programmer's job to listen to user and write codes that appeals to the public.

I understand the idea of redundancy with the End and right soft key performing the same task, but on certain applications (usually Java), the right soft key is dedicated to something else. I can also understand how the End key being so close to the 3 key when typing long posts on a forum or something similar can also be hazardous from my first hand experience alone.

The keypad layout on the E70 was brilliant since it separated the Send/End keys from the main keypad by the pencil, menu, and clear keys. The worst thing that happened if you mistype something is it will delete your last character. Then again, how often would you need to use the keypad on a phone with a full QWERTY keyboard?

I used to use the End key to minimize applications as well, but if you get yourself into the habit of focusing on opening the new application instead of focusing on minimizing the application to be run in the background, it won't be a problem anymore. So when I'm looking up a list of addresses in the Web browser and want a screenshot of that list, I don't pay attention to minimizing the Web browser, but think about what I need to do to get the Screenshot application open, and finally alternate between the two with the task manager. Does that make sense? It broke my End key habit.

thank you. i just got my e70-2 recently after using my SX1 for years and i have the same problem. i have the habit of hitting the red button with intentions to minimize it but everytime now it just kills the app. i don't really see a point also where the right soft key AND the red button does the same thing.

i have the n80, and i think it is good that the red button exits programs..but not while writing an sms. when i make a typo and try to hit the C button i 9 times out of 10 hit the red button and exit completly which is highly annoying.
