A few months ago I felt that my left knee was a bit weak, I didn't think much of it and because of my exams I was busy studying for it for the next month or so. 2 weeks after the holidays however, I began to feel this weakness again. It felt like my left knee was about to give way and is weaker than my right knee. Whenever I sat and moved my knee I felt a tiny vibration. Today when I woke up, I tried to walk and my left knee kept having this cracking sound and had the usual weakness. I went to a family doctor who told me to go to a specialist, although he did mention that this might be a case of the recurrent sublaxation of the patella. According to him its only treatable via physiotherapy and even so it might come back. I just got a few questions about this issue.

1)Are there any alternative treatments besides physiotherapy? And how is the therapy like.
2)Will this affect my mobility? I'm 16 this year and don't want this to affect my life.
3)I'm travelling next friday and I'm wondering if its a good choice or not.

The doctor said that it wasn't that serious but the word "recurring" and "physiotherapy" really got to me. Thanks alot for your help :)

You need to see an orthopedic surgeon who works on knees and get an MRI to see what is wrong inside. It is the only way to see inside the knee except surgery.

Travel will not hurt you but your knee might hurt. It really won't do any harm. Just don't do anything rough or really physical. You could hurt it more.

Pain is there to tell you that something is wrong but it's not anything life threatening or serious....it's just a hurting knee. If something was really seriously wrong, you'd know. Knees will scream at you if something is really wrong and you won't be able to walk or bear weight on it. So just be careful with it until you get back and then go see a knee doc and find out what is wrong.

Thanks but it's not really pain. It's just this cracking sound and feeling whenever I walk with my left leg.

okay,

My daughter has the same problem and when she was diagnosed, she was a cheerleader, so there is alot of running and jumping in her sport. Her orthopedic surgeon ordered a special knee brace to be worn 24 hours for the first three months and than she was allowed to only wear it whenever she was walking or doing physical activity. She also needed to do physical therapy which she did religiously. The physical therapy is to strenghten the musles that hold the patella in place.

From what I understand, if you are going to be athletic, than this patella problem is going to recur and you need to resume the physical therapy to strenghthen those muscles.
If you can remeraber the excercises that you were taught, I would suggest you start excercising and maybe you will not have to do the physical therapy.
Travelling is no going to be an issue for you. If you received a brace after your first occurence with the knee, maybe you can try to locate and use the brace. This will help make your knee feel a little bit stronger.
Hope this information helps you.
