Some tips for hiking as a woman?

I'm going backpacking in about a week. It is going to be about 4 miles, mostly flat but some ups and downs, at a higher altitude than I am used to working out at. We are camping out the night there and coming back the next day. I'm not in fantastic shape, but I've been on these trips before and done okay. I need some tips on what kind of pants and underwear to wear to prevent chafing? I may be on my period, how do I handle that? General guidelines from woman who do backpacking trips? How can I physically prepare for the hike, since that is more than I usually do, and I have a bad cardio system? Thank you

From a fairly experienced man hiker that hiked a lot with girls:

take it easy, don't rush, do the usual (drink water, protect from the sun and enough rest).
Don't let the people you are with to control the tempo and make you go faster and longer than you can.

I've hiked with girls that had their period and it sometimes affects them (more tired, headache, etc...) but its doable.

use zip lock baggy's to put your (stuff) in....one inside the other.
the other guy has good advise as well but in the mountains I personally advise that some one carry a fire arm.......this is not Disneyland...and in the real world people get in bad trouble sometimes!
