Some reason my java isn't working can somebody help me please?

I don't know if my java is working or not. But the story is I downloaded the latest Java Version 6 Update 23 and installing it to my computer the sign tells me I downloaded successfully. But when I test it on the Java website to make sure its working correctly nothing shows up in the box just a little x at the top left hand corner. Then also the java isn't loading correcting on some sits like on www.keepvid.com. It tells me there's a error. But its weird that the google maps is working correctly and I can look at videos on youtube and get on facebook with no problems. But just in case I go to this link http://javatester.org/version.html and it tells me if my java is working correctly or not. Some reason nothing is showing up in the box just a little x at the top left hand corner. When working correctly it tells me "If Java is working, you will see a pink rectangle above with one line of text that says something like". And after checking my internet options everything is enable and I also hit the default button too to change everything back how it was. So can anybody help me please I would really appreciate it. thanks.
