What Aristotelian idea did Gaileo discredit in his fabled Leaning tower of Pisa experiment? With inclined-plane experiements?

When a ball rolls down an inclined plane, it gains speed because of gravity. why doesnt gravity play a role when on a horizontal surface?
oops guess the title got messed, its supposed to be Some (more) basic physics questions.
