Software to measure distance in a Macro shot. ?

I am looking for something similar to DinoCapture software but without the $350 1.3MP microscope. Digital cameras on Macro setting are plenty detailed for my requirements (material inspection and quality control). I need to measure down to .001 would be great. I can take pictures with enough clear resolution and a micrometer to get the scale from. but I need a cheap or free software to measure small distances.
Please help. TIA.
