Supercell will sell a 51% stake in the Clash of Clans developer to Japanese mobile Internet giant Softbank and Gung Ho Entertainment, a deal worth $1.5 billion.
The Finnish-based game developer will operate independently and serve as a subsidiary of Softbank, the company says in a statement released Tuesday. Softbank will contribute 80% of the $1.5 billion investment, with game company Gung Ho contributing the remaining 20%.
In a blog post published Tuesday, Supercell CEO Ilkka Paananen says the deal will push the company closer to attaining a global reach.
"We want to build a company that people all over the globe will look back in 30 years and talk about all the great games that we developed and the impact they had on people's lives," says Paananen. "The same way I personally feel about Nintendo, for example."
Supercell is best known for Clash of Clans, a free-to-play strategy game for Apple iOS and Google Android devices where players form clans and defend their villages from enemies. It's currently the second highest grossing game on iPhone behind puzzle game Candy Crush Saga. The company also created the Farmville style game Hay Day, the fifth-highest grossing title on Apple's App Store.
The deal is expected to close by early next month.
