So what is really being built in Space right now?

Seems like there's more to it than those boring NASA TV videos are showing. Like maybe a space station or a missile defense system. What's your guess? Space has to be a lot more exciting than just losing wrenches.
 
I think it's a waste money poking around in space anyways.What if there is life or bacteria or viruses out there,they want to bring it here to possibly wreak havoc? I know I sound like a goofy person who's afraid of change but what if there really could be something harmful out there? With everything going on in the environment,economy,schools needing money,etc, I think all that money could be spent on more useful causes.
