I need a good dslr that won't kill me with it's pricetag. I know this is basically impossible, but do any of you have suggestions? Ideally, I wouldn't want to spend more than $500 for the body and another $150 or so for a lens. Is this unreasonable? I'm still a beginner but I want to be able to take quality pictures because my Olympus SP-500UZ isn't really doing it for me...
 
Good news! The Nikon D40 has become sort of the "go to" camera for your purpose. It is an excellant DSLR and can be had WITH the decent kit lens for under $500.
