When husband moved up here to western Washington state about 30 years ago, he didn't have any trouble with his asthma for about 12 years and then it started to come back. We assume it took that long for him to develop allergies to the local pollens. We always thought that his asthma was caused only by plant pollen or plant exposure because he never has it during the winter, only during the growing season, but we have learned that this is not the case.

We got milk goats 3 years ago and before that he hardly ate any dairy products compared to what he ate after we got the goats. The last 2 summers his asthma was the worst ever - he had to go on medication for the first time in his life and use his inhaler constantly, plus he was waking up in the middle of the night because he couldn't breath and not being able to get back to sleep after using the inhaler again.

This year he stopped eating all dairy products a few months ago - and now we are well into his asthma season and he isn't having any asthma. We had thought that dairy didn't affect his asthma because during the winter no matter how much dairy he eats he doesn't get asthma, but now we know that it is the corabination of dairy and pollen that cause the asthma.

I am writing this because there are probably quite a few people who's asthma could be improved by a change in diet. For a lot it could be eliminating dairy, but it could be other things. Eggs, chocolate, nuts, shellfish, fish, wheat (gluten), corn, citrus fruits, tomatoes, and strawberries are other fooRAB that people are commonly allergic to. It only takes about a week of not eating them to find out.

When my husband was eating only a little dairy his asthma was not as bad (but still bad) and taking niacin and vitamin C would eliminate his symptoms, but when he had a lot of dairy it didn't help anymore.
