So confused... Cingular, 3g, wifi, voip recommendations?

Okay, I figure I'm going to get flamed for asking this question, but here it goes anyway.

Can somebody recommend a phone for me? I've been lurking and poking around the forums for a while, and just seem to get more and more lost. Actually, if you just point me to the right threads to get up to speed I'd be more happy with that.

My old 6230 is going to get replaced, and whether I do that through Cingular or elsewhere I really don't care. I'm looking for a phone for Cingular/ATT that supports US 3G, Wifi & can do VoIP SIP. (SIP will be to my own Asterisk server hopefully.)

I was looking around and liked the look of the N80IE, but saw posts saying it's 3G compatible only not US 3G compatible? The regulars on this site are much more up to date than I am on the technology, so any pointers at all will be a big help.

Any help is appreciated!

There is only one possible s60 3g device.............N75...........no wifi though
If you see wcdma 2100....that is the rest of the world........Cingular is 850/1900

Sad to say but the best option would be the HTC TyTN or a variant of it. Although I think you cannot get it unless you were on T-Mobile.

Nokia, why are you lagging behind??

Don't worry, he'll be back after 5 minutes of Windows Mobile !
Everybody is (who isn't contractually obliged to use it).
Personally, I'd rather carry a 14-kilo laptop around than use Windows Mobile.
WM should come with health warnings : Usage of blood-pressure reduction med.s recommended.
Tried it, lost the will to live.
But if you have no alternative, at least avoid a touchscreen device.

Yeah, I looked at the Cingular 8525, but decided against it after talking to a few owners of the unit and the previous unit.

I'd like to stay away from Windows Mobile if possible. Not really boycotting MS, but I'm not always a fan of the borg mentality. I've been happy with Nokia since the old Nokia 232 over a decade ago, and I'll probably stick with them - but it's not mandatory. I will not pay for a Motorola though, I just have bad luck with those phones!

I have heard problems with Cingular's but never from the HTC branded TyTN.

Actually the TyTN has more variants then just that one. In fact the true name of the device is called the Hermes, also known as:HTC TyTN / XDA trion / MDA Vario II / VPA Compact III / SPV M3100 / Dopod CHT 9000 / Dopod 838 Pro.

A variant would not just be the 8525. But heck I am not pulling hairs.

Anyway, as having actually used both OS for a number of years, I cannot actually say that WM is a POS. It is different, yes, but POS, nope. Especially the unbranded WM6 which I am running right now.

As a matter fact I hate to say it but from power user perspective and options which I use everyday very little on it V3 has nothing on it. For example, can I bring down the power wattage used on WiFi on any S60 V3 device to conserve battery when reception is good? On the TyTN is option is blatantly there, never saw it on the Symbians I tried. Anyone one?

Trust me, I DID not want to leave symbian but right now Nokia does not make
anything Wifi\HSDPA enabled\great Qwerty\fast and with sufficient RAM after reboot --don't say the E61 since my 6620 had more free RAM then that-- flexibility and usability (unless really, the user is a moron and has not read the manual) in one package as the TyTN.

Maybe later this year. I hope. I might come back then.

Either way, it's quite a coin toss. You can turn down the power wattage, I can take photos at 3.2mp resolution with autofocus (or at least I could, when I still had my N73 )

I was thinking about getting the M700 Glofiish as an exception to the N95, but the biggest things holding me back was the poor, poor camera quality, the complexity of Windows Mobile and my limited time frame for learning how to use such a device (I'm pretty obsessive, so I'd spend weeks learning every tweak possible), and all the bugs I was reading about that specific model.

If it didn't have the full QWERTY keyboard, I would've have given it another thought. When comparing Symbian to Windows Mobile, I'm a firm believer that only models with a QWERTY keyboard can compete, since standalone touchscreen is more of a limitation than an improvement. Even with a full keyboard, I'm much faster with T9 and a keypad gives me the freedom to use one hand for text input or while I'm not looking at my device as well.

So, once again, it gets volleyed back to the hands of the user. Nokia is obviously focused more on media functionality and Windows Mobile devices are much more business oriented, so to each their own depending on their needs.

Edit: I will give Windows Mobile one all-inclusive point over Symbian/Nokia/s60/whatever in that they DO have 3G phones available already whereas we're just now seeing the release of the FIRST WCDMA 1900 s60 coming down the pipe. Nokia's in a goofy situation with Qualcomm over these technologies and it's certainly hurting their market share.

^^^ The WiFi issue was just an example. Since I have own both, I could go on quite a long list. But yes, ultimately it comes down to preference.

The point is that sadly WM6 is that bad, and trust me really dislike MS. But that is my personal opinion and it does not take away from the fact that the OS is actually good.

Guy, didn't Howard gave a so-so review of the M700 Glofiish. Or at least I have read a few review that do not speak highly of it. Not from the software perspective, but from the quality control of the unit itself. Check it out.

Okay, this isn't really the right forum to discuss the HTC TyTN, but since it's been brought up...

Have you used SIP on the phone & if so, how was it? I know that's a very loaded question, but I'm just curious if you found it usable.

Most of the TyTN's I see available are running WMv5, so how do you go about getting an OS upgrade?

I have to admit that the branded OS phones seem to be a real pain sometimes, so unbranded would probably be the way to go with that unit. Even PCs are that way - reinstalling the OS when they come through the door gets so much vendor crap out that it's almost a requirement!
