I want to purchase a phone/service that will work with a bluetooth system I intend to install in my '01 Lexus. I would like to have a smart phone [qwerty] and voice recognition. Don't need camera, gps etc etc junk. Any ideas??

I would start by getting a list of phones that are known to work with the Bluetooth system you're going to have. Once you have that list, then look for the features you want.

There are many stories out there about people not able to get their phone to work with their car's Bluetooth.

Agreed... I got burned with my last car... it had BlueTooth, but only worked with 3 CDMA model phones... and I am on GSM, so was a waste of time.

Seriously? That's ridiculous. Who made the system that was in your car? Did it come factory installed?

Edit: Who is your carrier, J. Bowman?

fyi, Verizon has recently put out a pretty good guide to which phones work with specific cars.

I don't know how much help this is going to be for someone putting an after-market solution into a car, but I would definitely require the Bluetooth kit dealer to guarantee support for a phone before I forked over the cash.

Was factory installed... it had BT 1.0 and it was very poor quality at best... even when I did get the limited services running, it was choppy and prone to interference all the time.

Super-low-end garbage...

So I say do your homework people...
