small bell shaped flower on weed?

I live in Charlotte, NC and recently purchased a house with a front yard covered in a small flowering plant, the flowers are a very light colored purple and are about the size of a pencil eraser. the leaves look sord of like layers as the plant gets taller with the flowers under them. What type of plant is this and how do i get rid of it, the object is to re-seed and fertilize yard so any suggestions on that would be appreciated too. Thank you
