Slim PS3 and Slim 360... each company copied the other?

It seems the slim PS3 console now has physical buttons (like the stock 360) while the slim 360 console now has touch-sensitive buttons (like the stock PS3).

Why did each company change what they had? Did they think the "other guy" did it better?
