Sliding phones

I currently have a Samsung SGH-E730 and have had it for roughly 2 years now. I love the size and the practicality; however, it is not my first phone I have owned.

I been really considering getting another phone because the E730 does not have any instant messaging programs which is one thing I found myself needing again.

I have been also very intrigued but the Nokia 8800 but it does not have messaging and the price is hefty.

I am really considering another phone to be a slider phone so I like some suggestions in terms of looking for a slider phone with the elegance of a nokia 8800 or Sony Ericsson S500i but with messaging included.

I considered the D600 from Samsung; however, there is no custom ringtone support which was a big downer and shocker for something so basic to have.

So the point is... can anyone suggest a good sliding phone that has messeging softwares included such as: yahoo, msn, aim, icq... has custom ringtone (mp3) and a camera would be a def. bonus. My preferences has always been Nokia or Samsung but if something out there can meet my needs in terms of looks, functions I am looking for and a decent price. I am willing to consider.

Thanks!

The Samsung E730 should support IM programs. It has Java MIDP 2.0 meaning you should be able to install IM programs like mig33+. Infact check out this link... http://www.getjar.com/products/6925/Mig33Plus. The E730 is listed as compatible.

I wouldn't recommend the nokia 8800. The Sony Ericsson s500 looks interesting and it should also support mig33+.

Anyways, I think the Samsung U600 is worth considering. It's small and sleek. Decent camera. Reasonable price. Supports MP3 ringtones. Should support IM programs as well if it doesn't have them pre-installed.

Are you able to confirm if it has software, I looked into the U600 but still considering since not sure of the battery life and what I am looking for (IM messeing).

You can always get an extended battery which are usually less than $10 on ebay.

And i'm fairly certain there will be IM applications for the U600. If you want to be absolutely sure the phone supports instant messaging ask in the samsung forum. There's probably a U600 specific thread.

I went ahead and purchased a Nokia 6300 unlocked from amazon.
I will be keeping my current flip phone as a backup or other use since it is small and still very good.

I plan to get the Nokia 6500 slider when it comes out.

this way I have a candy bar, flip and a slider

So now I am waiting for my nokia 6300, hope it comes in mint condition (new as stated), meanwhile. I will be searching for stuff upon it on here in terms of software, tweaks and what nots.

Nothing is wrong with it. In fact it's a decent OS. I just prefer the S60 OS over S40 OS (nokia 6500). S60 is a smartphone platform whereas S40 isn't. This following article mentions some of the pros and cons of each OS--- http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/features/item/Series_40_vs_S60.php.
