Sleep Paralysis or an Encounter from the Spirit World?

I am a huge believer in ghost and the spirit world. I would just like to know what I experienced is just sleep paralysis and how I can avoid from this happening or something else.

Recently I have been sleeping on the couch downstairs as I have trouble sleeping in my room. A weird pressure feeling comes over me and I am always unsettled in my room.
The other night I was finding trouble to fall asleep on the couch. I finally did fall asleep but woke up drenched in sweat around 2 o'clock in the morning. It wasn't a hot night either. When I awoke I looked up and saw someone sitting on the end of my bed.
It was a black shadow and he was looking down. Even though he was a black shadow I had a feeling that his eyes were closed. I wasn't scared, didn't feel fear but for some reason I did start to cough. I already have a cold but this cough was bad. It went on for a good 30 seconds of dry coughing.
I was gasping to breathe and it got to the point that it felt like I was going to vomit air. It was a horrible experience. For some reason, not sure how I fell asleep again.
At 4 am I awoke again and the same thing happened, drenched in sweat, still sitting at the end of couch and then the coughing attack begins to the point I feel like I am almost going to die and have to calm myself. Although I wasn't scared of the shadow. He felt familiar. And for some reason even though no words being said I felt like he was talking to me. I am really not sure how to explain this part so I will leave it alone. (The whole talking to me without speaking or without hearing his voice in my head).
After the coughing attack, I think the whole thing completely exhausted me and I fell into a deep sleep until mid day. The whole thing slipped my mind until I felt that my ribs and my muscles were actually so sore from the coughing although I do feel better.

If it is sleep paralysis how can I avoid it? It's actually really awful to go through whilst trying to get a good night sleep :(

I'm open to suggestions and would like to hear what others think.
:)
