Slave Cylinder on a 1981 Jeep CJ5.... What does the sring on that do?

I have a cracked slave cylinder on my 4Cly Jeep CJ5. Got a new one and was putting it on. There is a spring that on one side, connets to teh thowout lever on the clutch. On the other end, it connects to a ring around the rubber housing on the rod on the cylinder. When I attached the spring, the tension pulled that ring right off the rubber housing. Trying to figure out what it is for.. if maybe I can do without having the spring connect the two. Doubt it, but still curious as to what it does.. Any advise? Thanks.
