Hi everyone - I used to post on HealtrabroadoarRAB and just wanted to come back here because, at 28 years old and after years of dealing with mild-moderate acne, I've finally found a routine that works for me, so I hope it might help some people out that are battling with it.
To get an idea of whether or not this might help you, the most common place I've gotten pimples is all over my chin, including big ones along the front of my jaw line. Also would get bumps on my forehead and occasionally a big one on my nose that would take forever to go away. I was on the pill for a few years, during which time my skin looked great, but my acne came back within a couple months of stopping the pill, and I don't want to go back on it. I have corabination, sensitive skin. It dries out really easily but also gets oily. Washing my face both in the morning and at night irritates my skin.
So anyway, after trying tons of products with unexciting results, I'm finally excited about what I've got going now. I've been doing this for about a year, and whenever I stop for a couple days I start to break out again, so I credit this routine with making my skin better as opposed to just outgrowing pimples. Here's what I do:
At night, right before bed, I wash my face using Biggs & Featherbell's Handle Bar soap. They have a website where you can order it from, or they might carry it at a store near you - their website lists retail locations. I love this soap! And it's only $4-5. I start off by wetting my face with warm water, then I lather up the soap and use it, and then I rinse it off with a somewhat cool washcloth and let my face air dry.
In the morning, after I dry off from my shower (I do not wash my face in the shower), I apply Kiehl's Yerba Mate Tea Toner using a cotton ball. Unfortunately this stuff is $25. But a bottle does last a few months as long as your cotton balls aren't huge and you don't use too much of it.
I do that all year-round, until my skin starts to dry out in the winter as it does every year. At that time I switch my nighttime cleanser to Cetaphil's Gentle Skin Cleanser. I still use the toner in the morning, and only when my skin is dry I follow the toner with an application of Cetaphil's "Moisturizing Lotion." Once my dry skin goes away in the nicer weather I go back to the B&F soap.
So that's what I do. I rarely wear makeup now aside from a little L'Oreal True Match powder to control shine. As for the toner, if you're skeptical about the price, maybe you can find a cheaper one with similar ingredients, but I looked at the drug store and didn't see anything similar. I haven't tried any other toners in the morning so I can't compare results - I was given this one as a gift and it ended up working great for me, so I'm going to keep using it. I was still getting pimples before I started using the toner in the morning, regardless of what I washed with at night.
Hope this helps somebody out there.
