Six Months Bicycling around the U.S. & Canada?

This afternoon I met a guy who moved out of his apartment, got rid of his possessions, except a bicycle, and is on a six month tour around the U.S. and Canada. Sounds like a great adventure, however, he is doing it without money, i.e., he is sleeping in a sleeping bag under the stars and only receives $400 a month for food from his brother. He does 20 miles each day and I wonder how someone can make that decision? Your feedback? Wise, crazy, impressive???
Oh, almost forgot, he's 46 years old!
