Sinusitis/flu then woke up shaking

Hi guys. Ive had a sniffly cold for over a month and I was using a nasal spray most nights to get rid of the stuffy nose. I must admit I was quite bad (and always have been) with snooking and not blowing out the mucus once the nasal spray had kicked in. 3 nights ago, I really overdosed on the nasal spray (vicks sinus spray, strong stuff) with around 8 shots instead of 2. I know it was silly but it just wasn't doing it's job as quick as i'd have hoped. I then woke up struggling to breathe with my head feeling like it was full of air and I felt really weird. I went to hospital and explained what had happened and he didn't seem to be very worried.

The day after when my mind was at rest, I took some paracetamols and I got a good nights rest.

3rd day later, i'm not too sure what happened but I went to bed at around 11.30pm. I only had 1 slice of pizza for tea as I was told not to eat much whilst having the flu. I woke up at 2am shivering/shaking very violently and felt like I couldn't breath. I got tucked up into loads of sheets and sweated quite badly and was tempted to go to hospital again, but 10minutes later and some calm talking from my g/f and I was absolutely fine again but my head was still a bit spaced out and it felt like not enough oxygen was getting to my head. I'm not sure if the shaking was to do with not eating tea that night and my body going into starvation mode or not..??

Today the head feeling has gone and i'm just getting a few minor headaches but now when I try to eat I feel sick like I really won't be able to keep it down, but I have managed to. I had some dinner earlier today and forced some soup down tonight and although I didn't really want it, when I was near finishing it then went down with no problems. I am feeling quite relaxed now with a drink but it was quite scary to be fair as i've never experienced anything like this before.

My auntie is an intensive care nurse and she said it sounded like sinisitus? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

Chills/cold sweat usually mean your body is fighting off infection.

Your body has an internal thermostat, when your immune system recognizes a threat (bacterial or viral) it turns up the heat, literally, setting your internal temp to a higher point (fever) making your body an uncomfortable place for the invaders. Unfortunately, it also makes it uncomfortable for you!;)

Once the thermostat is reset to "fever mode", it takes awhile for your body to reach that new point, while that's happening you're going to feel cold and get chills. Sometimes an outright fever follows the chills, sometimes it doesn't and your thermostat returns to normal.

Sinusitis is an infection of the sinus and could certainly cause chills and/or fever. Waking up with "air hunger" can happen with sinusitis as well. I've had it, it's very distressing, especially when it wakes you up and you're still disoriented from sleep. If you read up on sleep apnea you can get some tips on avoiding those scary middle of the night wake ups.

Hi Leela,

Thanks for the reassuring reply and i'm sorry I didn't respond earlier. I read your reply but totally forgot to reply as i've been really busy with an important exam and family stuff etc.

It has gone now but it lasted well over a week feeling really out of breath. It wasn't a feeling of out of breah in my lungs as my nostrils were fine, it was when I took in air, it felt like it was expanding rapidly inside my head, and pretty much the same when I was breathing out, something i've never felt before. It was very strange!

Might have been flu? Who knows

Also, I just noticed you were in Florida. You lucky lucky person :) We go there all the time, my dad absolutely loves it (massive theme park nut) and the weather is amazing most of the time. I could do with a nice swimming pool in the sun when I get home from work. All we have here is rain and cloudy skys 24/7 :(
