Since when do you have to pay for movies at theaters?

For the past 5 or 6 years I have been walking into theaters and watching the movies for free, it wasnt until last friday that I got in trouble for it. I went to see anal orgy gest III and walked on in, grabbed a drink from the Coca Cola fridge and some candy off the glass shelf and went into the theater. For some reason I got kicked out for not having a ticket... how long have you had to pay for movies? Also why did they force me to pay for the soda off the shelf?
