At the end of the first day of standing in the same place for hours while working, my knees and lower back screamed in protest. I went looking for ways to keep moving while staying within arm's reach of my computer and discovered a great post over at fitness blog FitSugar that's got a bunch of great ideas.
I'd already been doing some simple side leg raises and squats to keep the blood flowing, but they also suggested a few other ideas I hadn't tried.
- Stand tall and alternate bending one knee up to your chest and then the other. Do slow, controlled movements to work your abs, or make the moves quicker to get your heart rate up.
- To warm up your hips and tone your abs, stand with your feet slightly wider than hip-width distance apart, and do figure eights with your hips (it's a belly dancing move).
To get even more mileage out of a standing workstation, rig one of these setups to your treadmill to burn mad calories while fulfilling your corporate responsibilities.
