Ancient Greece and the Middle Ages were similar in many regards. Each a sort of patchwork quilt of small political units. There were thousands of Greek city states, each independent
And in the middle ages, big nation states--that today we call "Germany" and "France" had not been carved out. These territories were governed by local dukes, princes, etc. Countries had not yet been unified.

Roman Emp and Byz were similar in that each was unified and with a strong central authority, big bureaucracy. Both these 2 would be easy to contrast with the the column A ones I picked

Here's how you can score pts. In picking Ancient Greece, note how Athens became a head city in an empire and forced many city states to join it. Then power block led to a rivalry with Sparta, which resulted in the Peloponnesian War, which resulted in the defeat of Athens. Thus this concentration of power led to the fall of Greece--certainly to the end of what he most consider the Grecian legacy of the fifth century--in democracy, architecture, philosophy, literture.

And likewise, one could argue that it was the concentration of Roman power, in creating an empire that was too big and had too many enemies, that ultimately led to its "fall" in the hands of invading tribes and Christianity.
