Think about Flash -- you generate a .SWF file that can be hosted on ANY web server (doesn't matter if it is IIS, Apache, Macintrash, Windoze, Linux, etc...) As long as the client web browser has a Flash plugin, it can understand and render the SWF (in general)
Is this how Silverlight works? Or do you have to have a .NET (or mono) server?
Basically I'm just looking for technologies that work on Windows, Macintrash and Linux. HTML5 looks like it will be nice when its finished, but right now it is severely incomplete and results vary widely between the various browser implementations (remember JavaScript???)
Is there another solution to Flash? I'm mainly looking on behalf of Mac users who apparently say Flash support sucks on Apple... (or maybe Steve Jobs is just moaning too loud and distracting me?)
Gardner -- can you explain a little more? Why would a .NET upgrade matter? Are you saying the server hosting the Silverlight applet must have access to .NET (or Mono for *nix)?
I am still confused. What I am trying to determine is if there are other dependencies in order to host Silverlight. Flash creates SWF. That is all you need for basic flash projects. Does Silverlight create some other format -- say .SLV (I have no idea). Or is there more to it than that? I know hosting an ASP.NET website REQUIRES .NET on the server (and IIS generally). I am trying to understand if MS has coupled Silverlight to require a .NET component on the server or whether it can be hosted by simply copying a file (e.g. .SLV) to a server? Sorry for being confusing.
