Signal Loss on 1 of 2 receivers

Hello,
I have 2 receivers - a 3100 and a 5900, and my 5900 is so much more sensitive to signal loss due to poor weather. It will start losing signal, the moment there is the slightest rainfall, while the 3100 is perfectly fine. I've had them on the same channel and I've tried switching their positions and I get the same result. I don't know what else to try - the 3100 works excellent and won't lose the signal unless there is a downpour or something severe. Thanks for any help you might have.
 
Is the signal strength the same on both units.?

If it is then I think the issue could be with a chip inside the 5900 that overheats. I am sure I have read about this elsewhere, a connexiant chip I think.

One fix was to ensure the receivers fan is operating correctly, again, I seem to remember that some 5900's had the fan blowing into the unit, needed to be reversed.

Other than that I dont really have a perfect fix. Maybe get an in-line amp and install it a few feet from the 5900's input.

I tested my signal strength on both receivers and they were both at 85%.
As far as cooling is concerned, I've rigged up an old power supply with an 80mm fan exhausting air from the hard drive side of the receiver. It is cool to the touch. I set that up from the day I got it because I didn't have much faith that the little fan built in would be sufficient.

It sure does seem strange, you would think they would both behave similiar if they have the same signal. One thing I did notice is when the 5900 acts up, it will have a good signal and then lose it altogether and say wrong sat, and then come back and it'll do that every few seconds until the weather clears.
 
Use Google and look for connexiant chip issues, I really think it may be related....

Is it Rented.? If so call and have them ship a new one.
Is it in warranty, same as above.......

Thanks for the info man...I see what you mean about the chips having issues. I guess I'm outta luck - I bought the 5900 between 2 to 3 years ago I think, so I'm pretty much stuck with it. Well at least it works ok most of the time (except when you wanna record a show ;)
 
I read that heating the chip and pushing it on the Motherboard helped a few people.

There are guys out there who will replce it for you, sorry I cant give you names though....
